From royal post office to luxury hotel

The representative building at Munich's central station was originally built to be the main royal Bavarian post office.

Some 100 years later, the former post office building is now home to 5-star luxury hotel Sofitel München Bayerpost. The Munich architects had the listed building featuring the Italian style of High Renaissance gutted to restore the original design of wide open spaces and high ceilings. The north wing was replaced by an imposing new structure that accommodates around half of the 339 rooms and 57 suites and offers views reaching as far as the Alps from the upper floors.

Guests passing the venerable façade into the five-star hotel discover a modern building featuring a unique combination of mid- to late-19th century and design-oriented furnishings. The centrepiece is the foyer: measuring 27 metres in height, it provides access from the lobby to the building section at the rear.

"We are delighted to have joined forces with Accor and the Sofitel brand in a contract to incorporate the special history of this high-calibre property located right at the heart of the city into a new design and to secure its position as a flagship in Munich's hotel market."
