New tenants at iconic "Sugar Cube" in Helsinki
The iconic office building and architectural landmark, "Sugar Cube," located at Kanavaranta 1 in Helsinki, is pleased to welcome new tenants. Designed by the legendary pioneer of modern architecture, Alvar Aalto, the Sugar Cube has been captivating visitors for decades with its visionary integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.
With the addition of Ilmatar, a renowned renewable energy company, Deka Immobilien has achieved a milestone in leasing. Earlier this year, the global law firm, DLA Piper, also moved into the building. Together with these esteemed tenants, the occupancy rate now stands at an impressive 80%. Furthermore, in spring 2024, the opening of an outstanding rooftop restaurantis planned. Esteemed chef Tommi Tuominen, the only Finnish chef with two Michelin stars, will manage this high-quality culinary offering. The top floor of the property provides a breathtaking rooftop terrace with unparalleled views of the sea and Helsinki city center.
These leasing successes are particularly gratifying considering the building stood completely vacant after the departure of Stora Enso in February 2022. Deka Immobilien has owned the Sugar Cube for over ten years. Since its completion in 1962, it had been occupied by "Stora Enso", one of the largest Finnish companies.

To meet the needs of the tenants, Deka Immobilien has modernized the premises while respecting Aalto's architectural legacy. Ilmatar will occupy the fourth and fifth floors, totaling approximately 2,570 square meters of office space interconnected by a staircase. The fifth floor houses historically significant meeting spaces that will be meticulously restored in collaboration with the Finnish Heritage Agency. Additionally, other areas of the building will undergo user-oriented modernization, always with a deep respect for Aalto's visionary approach.
